Hey friends! Meet actor Jayson Blair! (noted for his work in The Hard Times of RJ Berger, The New Normal and The Young & Hungry.)
I first met Jayson during my SoulCycle class. I noticed him during the ride because of his insane work ethic…the fact that when I instructed my riders to turn up the resistance, he actually DID. EVERY SINGLE TIME! Now there’s commitment!
We chatted after class and turns out our mutual friend had brought him in to ride! They are currently working on CW’s “Life Sentence” which is filming in Vancouver.
Jayson took time out of his crazy shooting schedule to answer some questions about SoulCycle for us. I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know Jayson through SoulCycle, and I am blown away by his passion for his craft, his devotion to his girlfriend Claudia Lee (fellow actress and equally amazing human) and his “tell-it-like-it-is” atttitude.
How did you first find SoulCycle?
I first found SoulCycle through my friend Tiffany, whose workplace was offering free rides for the week.
What is your favourite genre of music to ride to?
I like to ride to music that gets you going. So, mostly electronic or hip hop. If you remix them together, even better.
How do you cross train?
I like to do heavy lifting with training to counteract the cardio you get done in SoulCycle. Weight training is essential for building lean muscle. Then the cardio cuts the fat down.
With your crazy work schedule and long hours, how do you stay motivated to keep fitness a priority?
Honestly, I’m motivated by my job to do workouts. Knowing you will be shirtless on television will get you in the gym before, or after a 14 hour day. I think it’s important to find that “special thing” that keeps you motivated, whatever it is. For me, it’s work.
What has been something you have had to overcome in your life to get to where you are now.
I’ve had to overcome the fear of not being good enough to get to where I am today. I spent a lot of time making excuses for why I wasn’t good enough. Then I figured I’m as good as anyone else, I just have to apply myself twice as hard as they have to get to where they are. At the end of the day, we are the only ones holding ourselves back.
Is there anything that SoulCycle has helped you with in your personal life?
SoulCycle really helps me get that release mentally, while getting an aggressive cardio session in at the same time. For me, having the schedule that I do, it’s important to be able to get those two things at once. I think that’s the sweet spot of SoulCycle. Two birds with one stone sort of workout.
Do you prefer hills in class or the fast jogs?
There’s a time and a place for hills in class, and definitely a time and place for HIIT (high intensity interval training) sprints outside. I truly think there’s really nothing better than sprinting outside up a steep hill at 100% exertion of energy for 25 seconds at a time. With that said, I have some knee pain, which makes cycling my ‘go-to’ for a great fat burning workout. The bikes REALLY do your joints some service, while allowing you to build muscle (if you turn that wheel to the right… am I right!?).
If you could hang out with a musical artist for the day, who would it be?
I would love to hang out with the frontman of Future Islands for the day. Samuel T. Herring is so interesting. Never seen anyone put on a show like that guy. Truly a mystery.
Are there any phrases or mantras that have stuck out to you when taking a SoulCycle class?
Many things you say stick with me actually. I think the one that really sticks with me is “opportunity is often disguised as HARD. ASS. WORK.”
It really rings true to me. The name of my corporation is One Day Away Inc. I named it that because in my business, as long as you’re working hard and doing what you need to do, you’re always one day away from your life changing. You just have to be working towards that goal.
Who would be the most fun person for you to ride next to?
I would like to ride next to Beyonce. I imagine her makeup would be perfect, with some really amazing lighting… And a fan… Definitely a fan blowing her hair at all times.
Anything else you want to add about SoulCycle and what it means to you?
I really love how SoulCycle is about each and everyone’s inner journey. It’s not a competition with others, it’s a competition with yourself, from inside out. One of my favorite things from SoulCycle is your special move when you body roll, while pushing away ass up in the air. I also love you dancing like a maniac, makes me super happy inside 🙂
Thank you to Jayson for taking the time to share his SoulCycle journey with us! You can also take a look at previous rider interview with Jovan Kirovski here.
